Emergency Delay and Closure Information

School Closings and Delays

Ferndale School District Winter Weather Reminders

As we proceed through the winter months, the Ferndale School District wants to help staff, students, and families prepare for inclement weather and potential school and program schedule changes.

Due to inclement weather/unsafe road conditions, we want you to be aware that we may have to cancel in-person learning for students. If we have to close our buildings for in-person learning, we will still be able to run a school day for students via remote teaching and learning. Remote (off-site) learning will include all students at the elementary and secondary levels, including those who receive special services or who take advantage of one of our Safe Remote Access Sites.

Announcements regarding the cancellation of in-person learning services will be issued through automated phone calls and emails to the account we have on file in Skyward (our student information management system) for each family. To be prepared for emergency situations like those caused by inclement weather, it is important that you keep the contact numbers in Skyward current. Information will also be posted on the district website and social media.

If a teacher experiences a power outage during live teaching, they will get back online as soon as possible. In such instances, students and families should focus on off-line and asynchronous learning, checking back periodically to see if the teacher is back online. More information regarding power outages can be located on the FSD website at FSD Power-Internet Outage Guidance.

In the event of a 2-hour delayed start, our remote-only students (those who do not attend in-person/hybrid learning) will adhere to the following schedules:

  • Elementary School Students: will follow the 2-hour delay and all AM Zooms will be canceled
  • Middle School Students: will follow their normal remote schedule with no delay
  • High School Students: will follow the 2-hour delay and the length of each period will be adjusted

Additionally, Developmental Preschool: both AM and PM sessions will be canceled

Each year, the district faces the possibility of schedule changes due to weather, road conditions or other emergencies. Connect to one of the technologies listed below to access district information about schedule changes:

Snow Routes

Buses may run behind schedule when fog, ice or snow conditions exist. Parents are urged to see that their children are adequately clothed so that waiting in cold weather will not be too uncomfortable. In the event of starting late on a given day, buses will maintain snow routes the entire day. If county officials close the road at which a bus stop is located, it will be the responsibility of the parent to provide transportation to school.

Please note, for McKinney-Vento and Foster transportation: If snow routes are in use and/or adjustments of school schedules take place due to weather (school cancellation, two-hour delay, etc.) in the Ferndale School District or any neighboring districts, out-of-district McKinney-Vento and Foster transportation will not take place on those days. All out-of-district transportation is canceled by both districts when either district is on snow routes, school is cancelled or on a delayed start due to weather.
